How to determine which accounts to include in your Portfolio Checkup.

There are two potential approaches to asset allocation. You may wish to choose an asset allocation for each goal or an asset allocation from an overall perspective. See Help if you'd like more information on either of these two approaches.

Goal-based Asset Allocation

If you wish to select accounts that are dedicated to a specific goal, such as a child's education, retirement, buying a home, etc.:
1. Simply select the accounts that you use to save and invest towards the given goal.
2. You may also add any investments outside of Schwab that will be dedicated to this goal by choosing "Add Outside Holdings" and entering your holdings.
3. When you choose your Target Allocation, be sure to complete the questionnaire or choose the appropriate allocation based on your single goal.

Overall Asset Allocation

You may wish to select all accounts in your personal portfolio and develop an overall plan. Since diversification is based on the way asset classes as a whole move relative to each other, you may want to select an optimal portfolio based on your total holdings.
1. Include in your Portfolio Checkup profile all accounts that are in your personal portfolio.
2. You may wish to exclude accounts you hold that are not primarily for your own benefit such as custodial accounts.
3. Also include all financial assets you hold outside of Schwab by choosing "Add Outside Holdings" and entering your holdings.
